P.E

At Newton Burgoland Primary School, we want every child to become physically literate and to discover a lifelong enjoyment of movement. Through high-quality physical education, participation in organised sport and regular opportunities to be active, we aim to develop healthy, confident and successful learners.

We recognise that physical activity plays a vital role in both physical and mental wellbeing. Regular exercise supports children's concentration, learning and attainment, while also improving fitness, resilience and overall health. We encourage all pupils to develop positive habits for an active lifestyle and understand the importance of looking after their wellbeing.

Being active is an important part of daily life at Newton Burgoland. We encourage children to get up and move every 45 minutes to an hour, often through outdoor walks, runs or active learning opportunities. These regular movement breaks help children to refocus, regulate and return to their learning ready to succeed.

Our PE curriculum develops fundamental movement skills, physical competence, teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship. Children participate in a wide range of activities, including games, athletics, gymnastics, dance, outdoor and adventurous activities, and competitive sport. Through these experiences, pupils learn the value of perseverance, determination, respect and fair play.

We also recognise the power of sport to bring people together. Participation in sport helps children build empathy, tolerance, cooperation and meaningful relationships. It teaches them how to work effectively with others, celebrate success, respond positively to challenges and support their teammates. These qualities contribute significantly to children's social, emotional and personal development.

As children progress through the school, they develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead active, healthy lives. We strive to ensure that every pupil leaves Newton Burgoland with positive attitudes towards physical activity, an understanding of its importance and the confidence to continue participating in sport and exercise throughout their lives.

Physical Education Knowledge Progression

Our carefully sequenced PE curriculum enables children to build their skills and understanding year on year. Pupils develop competence across a broad range of physical activities while learning about fitness, health, teamwork, leadership and personal challenge. Through progressive opportunities to practise, perform and compete, children become increasingly confident, capable and enthusiastic participants in physical activity and sport.

Our Physical Education curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge, skills and character needed to lead active, healthy lives. Through a range of sports, games, outdoor activities and opportunities for competition, pupils develop the STRIDE values that support success both in sport and beyond.
