At Newton Burgoland Primary School, we want every child to see themselves as a language learner and a global citizen. We aim for all pupils to achieve the expected National Curriculum standard by the end of Year 6 and to leave us with the confidence, curiosity and motivation to continue learning languages at Key Stage 3 and beyond. This ambition is reflected in our commitment to the STRIDE values that underpin all learning across our school.

Language lessons should be engaging, enjoyable and memorable; a part of the curriculum that pupils look forward to and approach with enthusiasm. Through learning a language, pupils develop not only their linguistic knowledge and skills but also the attitudes and habits that will help them flourish as lifelong learners.

Our Modern Languages curriculum enables pupils to embody our STRIDE values by:

    • Scholarship - developing knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and phonics while building confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

    • Teamwork - communicating and collaborating with others, supporting one another and celebrating shared success.

    • Resilience - taking risks, learning from mistakes and persevering when faced with challenge.

    • Independence and Responsibility - applying previously taught language independently and taking ownership of their learning.

    • Diversity and Respect - developing an appreciation of different cultures, traditions and perspectives, fostering understanding and respect for others.

    • Enquiry, Creativity and Curiosity - asking questions, making connections and exploring how languages work. Expressing ideas in new ways and developing a genuine interest in the wider world.

Through studying a modern foreign language, pupils gain a deeper understanding of both language and culture, broadening their horizons and preparing them to participate positively in an increasingly connected world. By the time they leave Newton Burgoland Primary School, we want our pupils to be confident, enthusiastic language learners who are ready for the next stage of their education and excited about the opportunities that language learning can bring.
