At Newton Burgoland Primary School, we believe that teaching healthy relationships is central to helping children become wise, compassionate citizens who can build positive connections with others, even when they hold different views or experiences. We want every child to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to form respectful relationships, make safe choices and contribute positively to society.

Using the LifeWise scheme of work, children learn about respectful relationships, friendships, family life, personal safety and wellbeing in an age-appropriate way. Pupils explore the qualities of healthy friendships, how to communicate effectively, how to resolve disagreements respectfully and how to seek help when needed. They also learn how to stay safe both offline and online, including understanding boundaries, consent, privacy and how to recognise unsafe situations.

We recognise that children grow up in a diverse society and encounter a wide range of cultures, beliefs, family structures and life experiences. Our curriculum helps children develop understanding, empathy and respect for others, while fostering a strong sense of self-worth and belonging. We want every child to feel accepted, valued and celebrated regardless of their ethnicity, religion, disability, family structure or any other characteristic.

Through open discussion, reflection and enquiry, pupils are encouraged to consider different perspectives and learn how to disagree respectfully. They develop the skills to listen carefully, express their own views thoughtfully and demonstrate kindness, acceptance and compassion towards others.

As children progress through the school, they gain a deeper understanding of relationships, emotional wellbeing, physical health and personal responsibility. Our aim is that every pupil leaves Newton Burgoland equipped with the knowledge, values and confidence needed to build healthy relationships, keep themselves safe and make positive contributions to their communities and the wider world.

    PSHCE/RSE Knowledge Progression

Our carefully sequenced curriculum enables children to build their understanding of relationships, health and wellbeing over time. Pupils develop age-appropriate knowledge and skills relating to friendships, families, emotions, personal safety, online behaviour, physical health and growing up. Through progressive learning and regular opportunities for discussion and reflection, children become increasingly confident, respectful and responsible individuals who are prepared for the next stage of their education and life.
