  • Our Forest School Curriculum

Forest School is a child-centred approach to learning that encourages curiosity, creativity and independent thinking. Through carefully planned, hands-on experiences, children are supported to take appropriate risks, solve problems, work collaboratively and develop practical skills. Activities may include den building, nature exploration, tool use, campfire cooking, environmental projects, wildlife observation and creative outdoor arts.

Our Forest School curriculum is designed to complement and enrich classroom learning while supporting children's physical, emotional and social development. Time spent outdoors promotes wellbeing, reduces stress and allows children to develop a deeper connection with the natural world. We aim to foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship, helping pupils understand their role in caring for the environment and their local community.

Through Forest School, children develop our STRIDE characteristics:

    • Scholarship - applying knowledge and skills in real-world contexts.

    • Teamwork - working cooperatively, communicating effectively and supporting others.

    • Resilience - embracing challenges, managing risks and persevering when tasks are difficult.

    • Independence - making decisions, taking responsibility and developing self-confidence.

    • Diversity and Respect - appreciating different perspectives, valuing nature and respecting others.

    • Enquiry - asking questions, investigating and discovering through firsthand experiences. Creativity and Curiosity - exploring, imagining, designing and innovating in the outdoor environment.

From their earliest days in school through to Year 6, pupils benefit from progressive outdoor learning experiences that build knowledge, skills and confidence over time. Our aim is for every child to leave Newton Burgoland with a sense of adventure, a love of nature and the belief that they can overcome challenges, contribute positively to their community and continue learning throughout their lives.
