  • Writing

At Newton Burgoland Primary School, we believe that writing gives children a voice. It enables them to communicate ideas, express their creativity, share knowledge and engage with the wider world. Our writing curriculum is designed to inspire children to become confident, skilled and purposeful writers who can write effectively for a range of audiences and purposes.

Writing is taught through high-quality texts that provide meaningful contexts for learning and expose children to rich vocabulary, powerful language and a variety of writing styles. Children learn how authors craft their work and use these models to develop their own skills as writers. Throughout the writing process, pupils are encouraged to plan, draft, edit and improve their work, developing resilience and pride in their achievements.

We teach the key components of writing progressively, including:

    • Composition and creativity

    • Vocabulary development

    • Grammar and punctuation

    • Spelling

    • Sentence structure

    • Writing for different purposes and audiences

    • Editing and improving work

Children are encouraged to write across the curriculum, applying their skills in meaningful and authentic contexts. Through regular opportunities to write, they develop confidence, fluency and independence as communicators.

    Handwriting

We believe that fluent, legible handwriting is an important life skill that supports effective communication and allows children to present their ideas clearly. Handwriting is taught explicitly and progressively throughout the school, helping children to develop good letter formation, correct pencil grip, posture and control from the earliest stages of learning.

We encourage children to take pride in the presentation of their work and to understand that neat, well-organised writing helps communicate ideas effectively. Through regular practice and high expectations, pupils develop a handwriting style that is both efficient and personal to them.

    Writing and Handwriting Progression

Our carefully sequenced curriculum ensures that children steadily develop their writing and handwriting skills from Early Years through to Year 6. As their knowledge and confidence grow, pupils become increasingly effective writers who can adapt their language, structure and style to suit different purposes and audiences, while presenting their work with clarity, accuracy and pride.
