At Newton Burgoland Primary School, we believe that mathematics is a creative, interconnected and essential subject that helps children make sense of the world around them. Mathematics has evolved over centuries to solve some of humanity’s most complex problems and continues to play a fundamental role in everyday life, science, technology, engineering and finance.

Our mathematics curriculum is carefully designed to develop confident, resilient and fluent mathematicians who enjoy tackling challenges and solving problems. We aim to provide every child with a secure understanding of mathematical concepts, enabling them to reason logically, identify patterns, make connections and apply their learning in a variety of contexts.

Through high-quality teaching, pupils develop fluency in key mathematical skills alongside the ability to think critically and solve increasingly complex problems. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their reasoning and explore different approaches to finding solutions. We believe that mistakes are an important part of learning and help children develop perseverance, confidence and a growth mindset.

As pupils progress through the school, they build a deep understanding of number, place value, calculation, fractions, measurement, geometry, statistics and algebraic thinking. Mathematical concepts are revisited and developed over time, allowing children to make meaningful connections between different areas of learning and gain mastery of the curriculum.

We strive to nurture curiosity and a genuine appreciation for the beauty, power and relevance of mathematics. By developing strong mathematical knowledge and understanding, our pupils are equipped with the skills they need to succeed in their future education, careers and everyday lives.

    Mathematics Knowledge Progression

Our carefully sequenced mathematics curriculum ensures that knowledge and skills build progressively from Early Years through to Year 6. Children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills at every stage, enabling them to become increasingly confident and independent mathematicians. Through regular opportunities to apply their learning in real-life contexts, pupils gain a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts and their importance in the wider world.
